Mir Taqi Mir Poetry: 10 Heart-Touching Sad Couplets in Urdu

Mir Taqi Mir (1723–1810) is often called the “Khuda-e-Sukhan” — the god of poetry — and no one in Urdu literature has expressed sorrow quite like him. Living through the destruction of Delhi in the 18th century, Mir poured grief, longing, and the pain of separation into ghazals that still move readers today. This collection presents ten of his most heart-touching sad couplets in the original Urdu script.

About the Poet: Mir Taqi Mir

Born in Agra in 1723 and later settled in Delhi, Mir witnessed the sack of the city and the ruin of the world he loved. His diwan, one of the largest in Urdu poetry, is filled with verses on loss, love, and the fleeting nature of life. For two centuries, lovers of Urdu poetry have turned to Mir whenever the heart is heavy.
